Today is #InternationalDayoftheMidwife. #Midwives like Oveka improve health systems & save the lives of mothers & babies. Invest in them for #MNH & #UHC
Oveka is co-Director of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Global Action in Nursing (GAIN) program, implemented in Malawi in partnership with GAIA. In this role, she serves as the maternal, neonatal and child health coordinator for GAIA and GAIN. In a recent op-ed co-authored by Oveka and published on The Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery Blog, Oveka and the GAIN team note the critical role midwives play in Malawi: "In public health care settings across Malawi, over 90% of pregnant women receive antenatal care from a skilled provider like a nurse midwife, making them a gateway for survival of mothers and babies." Essential to fully-functioning, thriving health systems, this op-ed also highlights the vital need to invest in proper education and training, like basic obstetric ultrasound scanning, as an effective strategy to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.

Yet, the world faces a global nursing shortage, negatively impacting progress toward #UHC and protection against global health threats like #COVID19. The @WHO estimates that 9 million more nurses and midwives are needed to realize UHC by 2030. Invest in them for #globalhealth security.

On this #InternationalNursesDay, we celebrate #nurses like Esnart who ensure quality healthcare access in hard-to-reach areas of Malawi -- a LMIC where there are only 7 nurses per 10,000 people (compared to 50 in South Africa and 157 in the US). Chronic health worker gaps like this strain health systems, particulary in rural areas, where the most vulnerable popluations often live. Invest in the #nursingworkforce for better health and well-being for all.
